Standards and Norms

Standards and norms as the foundation of proper network cabling

International standards and norms are a significant reason why our networks function well. They also mean that we hardly need to think about what equipment we can connect to this network. Following many interfaces, cabling systems have also been standardized. Clear international agreements have been made regarding what these systems must comply with. It may sound simple, but there are a vast number of standards and norms applicable to data cabling alone, such as ISO/IEC 11801, ISO/IEC 14763-3:2014 (testing of fiber optic cabling), IEC 61300-3-35 (inspection and cleaning of fiber optic connectors), CENELEC EN 50173, CENELEC EN 50174, and the American TIA standards.

Proper Interpretation and Installation

EN 50173 and EN 50174 are particularly important standards for designing and installing network cabling systems. While EN 50173 covers the design of network cabling systems in various environments (office environments, process environments, or data centers), EN 50174 describes all the conditions for their correct installation. Knowledge of these standards is crucial for anyone working with network cabling. This knowledge is essential for correctly interpreting texts in specifications and programs of requirements, as well as for the proper installation of these systems.

The courses are suitable for (prospective) designers, estimators, consultants, project managers, and installers of both twisted-pair cabling and fiber optic cabling. Since standards and norms are revised approximately every five years, we recommend taking a (refresher) course with us at least once every five years.

During our courses “Network Cabling | Design according to EN 50173-1 and 2” and “Network Cabling | Installation according to EN 50174-1 and 2,” you will gain accessible knowledge of these essential standards for network cabling.

We extensively cover where and when in the construction process these standards apply. We also explain terms and abbreviations, discuss the relationship with other relevant standards, and teach you the structure and content of EN 50173 and EN 50174.

Furthermore, we pay attention to the European Construction Products Regulation (CPR) regulation, of which network cabling is also a part. An important aspect of this regulation is the Euroclasses of cables, which set requirements for the maximum flame spread, heat release, smoke production, burning droplets, and the corrosiveness/acidity of gases released in the event of a fire.
